Associate Professor Peter C.J. Tien

Associate Professor Peter C.J. Tien

Specialist Orthodontist

Qualifications: BSc, BDSc, MDSc, MRACDS(Orth) 

Dr Peter Tien is a registered specialist Orthodontist in Australia. Dr Tien completed a 3-year Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Western Australia in 1989, and continued to study dentistry from 1990-1993. During this period he received the Lady James Prize in Physics and the Convocation Prize in Dentistry. Dr Tien obtained his Bachelor of Dental Science degree in 1993 and worked as a general dental surgeon in Perth as well as overseas for a period of 4 years before returning to Australia to undertake his specialist training in Orthodontics at the University of Western Australia. Dr Tien obtained his Master of Dental Science degree in Orthodontics in 2000.

Dr Tien was certified by the Australian Orthodontic Board in 2002, and received his Invisalign accreditation in 2002. Dr Tien received his Member of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in the Special Field of Orthodontics in 2008.

Dr Tien is a Full Member of the Australian Society of Orthodontists, and had served as past honorary Treasurer of the Australian Society of Orthodontists (WA Branch). Dr Tien was part of the organizing committee and chaired the Technology Session at the 18th Australian Orthodontic Congress. Dr Tien is also an International member of the American Association of Orthodontists. He is also a registered Dental Surgeon with the Dental Board of Malaysia.

Dr Tien combines part-time private practice at Cockburn and Fremantle Orthodontics / Endodontics, and teaching at the University of Western Australia since 2000. He was initially a clinical tutor in the Department of Orthodontics from 2000-2007. Dr Tien subsequently became Senior Lecturer from 2007-2009, and Associate Professor at the University of Western Australia from 2009 to the present. Dr Tien has been an invited lecturer at Curtin University to the Dental Hygiene and Therapy, and Bachelor of Oral Health students every year since 2003 to the present.

Dr Tien is a proud father of three children. Michelle is the eldest, was dux of Methodist Ladies’ College, completed a Bachelor of Science degree, and is now in the 3rd year of Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. Richard was dux of Christ Church Grammar School, completed a Bachelor of Science degree, and is now in the 1st year of Doctor of Dental Medicine program. Liam, the youngest, completed his Year 12 exams with an ATAR score of 99.9 and is now enrolled in the 1st year of Bachelor of Philosophy course with an assured entry to the Doctor of Medicine program.

In his spare time, Dr Tien enjoys spending time with his wife Christine, family, music, gardening and cooking.

Dr. Hui Lau

Specialist Orthodontist

Qualifications: BDSc (Honours), DCD (Orthodontics) 

Dr. Lau is a registered specialist orthodontist. She was accepted at the University of Melbourne with a scholarship to study Bachelor of Dental Science, graduating with Honours in 2007. After graduation, Dr. Lau worked at multiple private practices and government dental health services in Melbourne, providing care to patients from all walks of life. She also went on to complete the Primary Examinations of The Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.

Dr. Lau then moved to Perth and obtained her Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry (Orthodontics)from the University of Western Australia.As part of her doctorate program, she also completed her research evaluating the impact of growth and orthodontic treatment on the lips. The three-year full-time specialty training has equipped her with the knowledge and skill sets to manage orthodontic problems for patients of all age in the most efficient way. Hui specialises in child and adult orthodontics including Invisalign, functional appliances, skeletal anchorage assisted orthodontics and surgical orthodontic cases.

Dr. Lau is dedicated to provide exceptional care and consistently strives to achieve the best results for her orthodontic patients. She is committed to continuing education to ensure that she is at the forefront of orthodontic knowledge. Dr. Lau is registered as an Orthodontic Specialist with the Dental Board of Australia and is certified by the Australasian Orthodontic Board (AOB). She is also an active member of local and international societies, including the Australian Dental Association (ADA), the Australian Society of Orthodontists (ASO), the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), the World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO) and the Dental Specialist Society of Western Australia (DSSWA). She is currently the Recent Graduate Representative for the Australian Society of Orthodontists (Western Australia branch) and the treasurer for the Dental Specialist Society of Western Australia.

When she’s not working, Dr Lau enjoys socialising with friends, cooking and some gardening despite her not-so-green fingers.

Dr Richard Lee

Dr Richard Lee

Specialist Orthodontist

Dr Richard Lee is a registered specialist orthodontist. Dr Lee received his Bachelor of Dental Science with Honours from the University of Western Australia. Following completion of his dental training he served as a dental officer with the Royal Australian Air Force.

He returned to the University of Western Australia as a part time clinical instructor in general dentistry while completing a Bachelor of Science in Dentistry with Honours. He continued on and completed his Orthodontic specialist training, receiving his Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry (Orthodontics) from UWA with a research focus on the accuracy of computer assisted surgical simulation for orthognathic surgical planning.

Dr Lee was the recipient of the AB Travelling Fellowship award and undertook an Orthodontic Craniofacial Special Care Clinical Fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. This sub-specialty training in the management of complex orthodontic conditions included large caseloads of patients with craniofacial defects such as cleft lip and palate as well as patients with medical and behavioural issues.

Dr Lee is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia and continues to be involved in research and teaching the next generation of dentists and orthodontists.

Dr Lee is a member of the Australian Dental Association, Australian Society of Orthodontists, American Association of Orthodontists, the World Federation of Orthodontists and is Australasian Orthodontic Board certified. He is passionate about Orthodontics and helping patients achieve the best treatment outcome possible.

In his spare time he enjoys running, hiking, snowboarding and all things outdoors.

Associate Professor Christine Y. Yu

Associate Professor Christine Y. Yu

Specialist Endodontist

Qualifications: BDSc(WA),MDSc(WA), PhD (with Distinction)(WA), MRACDS (Endo), FPFA

Christine Yu attended the University of Western Australia where she earned her BDSc, MDSc and Ph.D with Distinction. Christine teaches part-time in the Endodontic Discipline as an Associate Professor of UWA Dental School at the University of Western Australia. She has published in several refereed dental journals. She has been the Sub-Editor of Australian Endodontic Journal since 2005. Christine has been a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals including Archives of Oral Biology, Dental Traumatology and Australian Endodontic Journal.

Christine is a Fellow of Pierre Fauchard Academy. She is also an active member of several local and international professional societies, including the Australian Dental Association (ADA), Australian Society of Endodontology (ASE), Australian and New Zealand Academy of Endodontists (ANZAE), International Association of Dental Traumatology, and Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in the Special Field of Endodontics.

Christine is a Past President of the Australian Society of Endodontology (WA Branch), a Past Councillor of Australian and New Zealand Academy of Endodontists, an ex-Board Member of the Board of Study in Endodontics for the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.

When not working, Christine enjoys spending time with her husband Peter and family. Her hobbies include music, reading, cooking and gardening.
